About

My Story

I moved back to Northern Nevada in 2000 and proudly began serving my community in 2006 as a Police Officer for a local police agency.  I hold an Advanced Certificate from the Nevada Police Officers Standardized Training (P.O.S.T.) and am currently certified as an NRA Range Safety Officer and NRA Instructor for: Basic Pistol, Personal Protection Inside the Home, and Personal Protection Outside the Home.

One of the firearms courses I took, was taught by retired female Police Officers and was tailored for female shooters, as we have different physical bodies, abilities, and learning styles than our male counter parts.  This course was not intended to separate or put one gender ahead of the other, but to help women work with our different body sizes, shapes, and physical abilities.  I took techniques that I learned in that course and have applied it successfully to both my male and female students over the years.

In 2020, I started Ox Firearms Training while working as a Firearm Instructor and CCW Instructor for Battle Born Ammunition & Firearms, Inc. in Carson City, Nv.  Fast forward to 2022.  A year of big changes.  I honorably retired from the Police force after 16 years and the gun store closed so the owner could retire and move out of state.  Rather than give up my passion for teaching, I invested in myself and my company and obtained my LLC (Ox Firearms Training, LLC).  I'm a one-woman show.  When you reach out to me, you get me.  I have a current business license with the State of Nevada, as well as Carson City and Lyon County.  When I'm not running my business, I am an independent contractor for nationwide firearm training companies (Focused Fire Training and Legal Heat) and travel Nevada teaching their curriculum.

I believe in myself and what I do.  I have a genuine passion to help people learn to protect themselves and their loved ones.  When I developed my 2 hour "beginner" handgun program, one of my main inspirations was a close family member who survived a violent home invasion where the criminal was armed with a gun. She was in her 50's and unarmed.  She was my first student.  Since then, I've taught males and females, ages 18-88 (88 and who survived 5 strokes!)...so it's never too late and you're never too old!

Thank you for reading my story and visiting my website.  My goal when you work with me, is that you leave feeling more comfortable with a firearm and confident in your shooting abilities.

          Sincerely,

Vanessa Maddox - CEO/Instructor/Web designer/Janitor and everything else at Ox Firearms Training, LLC.
